Surgery often plays an important role in cancer treatment.
In some cases, it may be the only treatment necessary, as there are certain tumors that can be completely removed by surgery. Other times it may be used in combination with radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
Surgery may be used to obtain a biopsy for diagnosis, to relieve some of the symptoms caused by a tumor, for reconstruction after the removal of a tumor and/or to implant catheters for administration of medicines.
The effect of the surgery will vary depending on the location of the cancer and the type of anesthesia used. Most minor surgery can be performed without an overnight stay in the hospital.
Your doctors will work with you to develop a treatment plan that is best for you, including whether you are a candidate for surgery.
