Radiation Treatments

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

Stereotactic radiosurgery is a specialized radiation technique in which a single high dose of extremely collimated radiation with multiple convergent beams is delivered to one or more brain lesions with submillimeter precision. This noninvasive, outpatient procedure is now available at Martha Jefferson Hospital. We have a team consisting of a neurosurgeon, a neuroradiologist, a radiation oncologist, and 2 physicists. SRS is delivered by a Varian Trilogy linear accelerator in conjunction with the Radionics XKnife RT System. The radiation is very tightly focused on the targeted lesion, with very minimal radiation to the surrounding normal brain tissue. Lesions suitable for treatment with stereotactic radiosurgery include brain metastases, acoustic neuromas and meningiomas.
