Prostate seed brachytherapy is an alternative to intensity modulated radiotherapy or radical prostatectomy for patients with prostate cancer. This option has been available to our patients since 1997. At Martha Jefferson Hospital, we have a dedicated team consisting of the radiation oncologist, urologist, physicist and dosimetrist, who perform this outpatient procedure in the operating room. Low dose rate palladium seeds are permanently implanted under ultrasound guidance into the prostate. For many patients, cure rates are comparable to surgery or external beam radiotherapy, often with fewer side effects. There is minimal disruption of work and family schedules with this very efficient technique.
