Medical Oncologists specialize in the use of chemotherapeutic agents to treat cancer.
They offer a wide variety of evidence-based treatment depending on the location and stage of disease. While radiation and surgery focus on the identified tumor, chemotherapy sends anticancer drugs both to the known cancer and through the bloodstream to eradicate any circulating, undetected cancer cells.
The medical oncologists' tools may include chemotherapy, biotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted therapy, to name a few. Also available to them is a broad range of supportive therapies to reduce or prevent anticipated side effects of treatment. Their goal is not simply treatment of the cancer, but of the person, taking into account the needs and desires of the individual and their loved ones.
Martha Jefferson Medical Oncology and the Martha Jefferson Infusion Center are conveniently located right inside the Phillips Cancer Center, with free self-parking or valet parking immediately adjacent to the building.
