Brain and spinal cord cancers are less common than other types of cancer.
In fact, the odds of developing a malignant tumor of the brain or spinal cord in a person's lifetime is less than 1 percent (about 1 in 150 for men and 1 in 185 for women). Survival rates can vary widely, depending on the type of tumor.
Though not impossible, brain cancers rarely spread to other areas of the body. However, even benign tumors can be harmful to normal brain tissue due to the compression they cause, causing disabling and sometimes fatal damage to the brain.
